Today I’m starting to write up some work about the launch of the Galleries of Modern London. It’s exactly eight weeks ago today that the galleries opened and their press coverage has settled down. Now that the promotional ‘You Are Here’ poster boards have been decommissioned and shared out amongst staff offices, it feels like the process of launching the galleries has also shifted its domain. When I tried to write about installation as it happened, my words were too descriptive. Research diaries worked out fine, but my chapter drafts suffered from a lack of analysis. Maybe I think slowly, or maybe immersion makes it difficult to see the bigger picture. Either way, a little time between the work and the writing has passed now, giving me a clearer space to think academically about the gallery launch.
You are here, but sometimes it takes a little time to think about it.
